Hill Walking Club

Enjoy the Outdoors!

Walking was by far the most popular activity mentioned at Freshers’ Fair, so we'll be arranging various walks throughout the year.  The venues will be decided nearer the time, but I’m open to suggestions - some of you know the area much better than I do.   Walks I’m considering are:

For the first walk I’d like to do a day-long walk that people with a basic level of fitness will find enjoyable and attainable.  It should also be one with a good pub near the end!  After the first day out we can also look at planning some more challenging days/weekends if that’s what you’re up for.

Please email me ASAP to register your interest in taking part so that I can consider things like transport!

TRANSPORT

I am going to try to arrange subsidised transport.  There are various options for this, including hiring a minibus, subsidising bus fares, or reimbursing willing car drivers for mileage (or a combination of all these things).  If you own a vehicle and would be happy to help out by giving people lifts to walks and other activities, please let me know.

Likewise, if you are over 25 and/or have a D1 minibus entitlement on your driving license (i.e. you passed before 1997) and are happy to drive hired vehicles please let me know.

EQUIPMENT

It pays to be prepared even if the sun is shining in the morning!  Scotland’s weather is gloriously and sometimes perilously unpredictable.  For walking you will need to own, beg, steal or borrow the following equipment:

If you have them the following would also be useful:

LIABILITY

Sadly in this day and age we need to consider the legal aspects of going for a stroll up a hill.  There is excellent guidance available from the Mountaineering Council of Scotland aimed specifically at University clubs and I will provide more information as soon as I can.

QUALIFICATIONS

If you have any outdoor activities qualifications, e.g. Summer/Winter Mountain Leader, Single Pitch Award, BCU Coaching Qualifications, Mountain Bike Leader qualifications etc I’d love to hear from you.  If this is the case and you are happy to use these qualifications to supervise groups, please come and have a chat.  Please bring your certificates, first aid certificate and logbook if applicable.

OTHER OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Rob Gray from Ae Bike Shop and Café has kindly offered us 2-for-1 bike hire over the winter months.  As soon as this is up and running I’ll organise a trip over to Ae Forest for some mountain biking – don’t worry, as well as some world-class cross country and downhill stuff there are easy beginners trails for those new to the sport.  And a great café with fabulous cake.  Have a look at  www.ae7.co.uk and www.7stanes.gov.uk

Activities such as camping, bothying, sea kayaking, sailing, climbing, fishing, gorge walking and power kites have also been mentioned…

WANT TO HELP ME ORGANISE ALL THIS???

I’m very happy to be doing all this but would always appreciate a helping hand!  Aspects in which you might want to become involved include:

Contact me if you want to help out!  This would provide students with great organisational experience...

Here’s to exploring Dumfries and Galloway and beyond.
